Meanwhile, back at the Challenge...

I am back to creating outfits for the Challenge. Here is Shorts outfit #2.

I am actually really happy with it. I got this little vintage top and shoes last year and have been pairing them with skirts, but like them with the shorts. I started out going for a preppy look with the bermudas and whites. But, then I decided to roll/cuff the shorts- and I pinned my hair up as well- so now it's a gibson girl gone Cape Cod preppy kind of look.

I think I'll actually wear this a lot throughout spring and summer- so I am excited. Two more shorts outfits to go!

I am also excited that What I Wore and Chic on The Cheap are in on the Challenge as well. It's interesting to see peoples picks and their reasons for choosing the items. Chic on the Cheap blog is taking the challenge further than just three pieces! It will be great to see what these fashionable ladies turn out with their challenge pieces.

And, now I am asking for some advice. Shoes. I love them. It's hard for me to find pairs that fit me and that I truly love (I have uber-teeny feet) and that's an issue but, the biggest problem I have with shoes is that I wear them down- a lot! I am really hard on them- I walk everywhere. I know I should probably wear sneakers or something - but, I walk so much in my daily life that that would mean I'd perpetually be in sneakers. All my shoes have worn down heels and soles - does anyone else have this problem? If so, what do you do to protect your shoes? I really want the shoes I have to last me a long, long time. Do you just replace the soles? Or, is there preventive action that can be taken? How do you care for your shoes?

  1. I agree! I love this!

I'm in on the challenge too - I pulled 5 dresses and 1 shrug I need to rework so I guess I should narrow that down to 3!

I have stuff to post tomorrow on that topic!

  2. I love the belt with the shorts!

Regarding shoes . . . I know it sounds old-fashioned, but find a really good cobbler. At least for your higher-end shoes. I found a pair of Frye boots for $25 at the thrift and wore them down rather quickly, but I couldn't bear to part with them (or pay $300+ for a new pair). The cobbler resoled them for around $50. And that was because he matched the original leather soles. I'm sure it could be done cheaper, too.

  3. That is such a cute outfit! Those shoes are perfect too.

And I'm super hard on shoes as well. I agree with what Angela said--a cobbler can be your best friend. That said, it's tough to find someone who's worth the money--I told my boyfriend to take some shoes with broken soles to the cobbler I've been using, and he paid $20 for each pair only to have the new soles break too--within a week.

So, I'm finding a new cobbler. But I know from experience that a good one can really extend a shoe-life.

  4. This is so adorably preppy, I like the shorts even better cuffed!

I don't usually have a problem wearing out my soles, generally by that point the rest of the shoes are so worn they aren't worth trying to repair.

I do know you can have a cobbler replace a leather sole with a rubber one, so that could give you some new life to your shoes.
