I guess maybe it's because I'm a romantic, but whenever I see a movie that I really like - I instantly wish that I could somehow magically transport myself into it and become a part of that created/imagined world. Yes, I can day dream myself into so many different movie scenarios - why did I not grow out of this? Anyway, I love that by the simple act of dressing we can (even in our daily lives) adopt a different persona. And, I'm not talking Sybil here - just that by putting on a frilly dress we can feel more romantic, by wearing a blazer and suit skirt, we can look the part of confident professional. It's a lot of fun really. I like that when I wear certain skirts and sweaters - or shift dresses I feel like Anna Karina in Une femme est une femme. Or that when I throw on a slinky dress I can channel Louise Brooks in Pandora's Box. I'm sure we can all come up with dozens of movie examples. I recently came across this book, Undressing Cinema: Clothing and identity in the movies, it's an interesting look at how clothing/ costuming become, not only a part of the characters in the movie but, they are symbolic and are almost a character on their own. This is simplifying what this book is about by a lot, so it may be worth the read if you're interested in film and fashion.

I know exactly what you mean! So many times I have been drawn to things based simply on the fact that they remind me of a character I like and secretly would like to be.
ReplyDeleteI know the feeling! Any time I watch any kind of period piece I wish I could just transport to that place/time, and I do keep that era in mind when deciding what to wear, music to listen to, etc.
ReplyDeleteI've never been a romantic, but reading fashion blogs (and blogs like yours that look at fashion in films) has made me more aware of how deliberately and beautifully designed films are, and how this design is really important to the story. And it makes me wish I could be as talented as a costume designer!
